Jazz is not just background music; it is a distinctly American art form shaped by Black communities and the lived experiences that gave it voice. Emerging from a blend of African rhythms, spirituals, blues, and improvisation, jazz became a powerful way for Black musicians to express creativity, resilience, memory, and truth.

Over time, jazz grew beyond entertainment and became a cultural language that reflected the Black American experience in all its complexity. It carried stories of struggle and joy, protest and celebration, and helped define not only the sound of American music but also the sound of American identity itself.

 

At the Arts & Letters Jazz Brunch, we honor jazz as a living tradition rooted in Black communities and sustained by generations of artists who transformed personal expression into a global art form. This celebration recognizes jazz not as a backdrop, but as a central thread in the cultural fabric of America.
