In 1947, Beta Kappa Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. received its charter as a mixed group, consisting of the undergraduates of Livingstone College, and the graduate members in the Salisbury-Rowan community. The event took place on the Livingstone College campus, located in Salisbury, North Carolina, and the presiding officer was the Eastern Regional Director, Soror Muriel Johnson of Bowie, Maryland.

 

In 1952, the number of graduate sorors had increased to the extent that the establishment of a graduate chapter was possible. Therefore, on April 24, Delta Tau Sigma was organized and the charter was granted under the direction of the Eastern Regional Director, Soror Pauline Weeden Malloy of Lynchburg, Virginia. Four years later (1956), the name of the chapter was changed to the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter (SAC).

 

Twelve sorors claimed membership in Delta Tau Sigma Chapter when it was organized.  The charter members were Willie Aldrich (ΩΩ), Nan Lash (ΩΩ), Meriam Little (ΩΩ), Geneva Evans (ΩΩ), Fletcher J. Brown (ΩΩ),  Eliza Miller (ΩΩ), Myra Thomas (ΩΩ), Cora Drakeford (ΩΩ), Elnora Smith Jones (ΩΩ), Carolyn Payton (ΩΩ), Mary Hopkins (ΩΩ), and Bettie McLaurin. (The names of all the chapters were changed by a decree issued at the 24th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta in Detroit, Michigan. Hence, the change in the local chapter's name. However, the group did not acknowledge the new name until the opening meeting of the 1959-1960 academic year.)
